Born on July 18, 1937, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Gail Ross was a pioneer of grassroots racing whose passion for motorsports shaped communities and inspired generations. In 1965, he moved to Ada, Michigan with his wife, Alice Ross, where he continued to build his life and career.
Gail began racing in 1958 after attending events at the Grand Rapids Speedrome. Over the decades, he competed in super modifieds, late models, stock cars, Zoo‑Mods, and street stocks, leaving his mark on numerous tracks including Berlin Raceway, Kalamazoo Speedway, Spartan Speedway, Hartford Speedway, Owosso Speedway, and Winchester Speedway in Indiana. His first feature win came in 1958, sponsored by The Brew, and it marked the beginning of a long and celebrated racing journey.
In recognition of his contributions, Gail was inducted into the Michigan Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1999, a testament to his enduring impact on the sport.
Gail will be remembered as a Hall of Fame inductee, a pioneer of grassroots racing, and a man whose love for motorsports never wavered. His legacy lives on in the tracks he raced, the victories he earned, and the community he helped shape.
